Dance Minor

Nurture Your Passion for Dance While Developing Foundational Techniques.

Are you passionate about dance? UMass Boston’s Dance Minor is a fantastic opportunity to explore and expand your love for dance.

As part of the Performing Arts Department, this program gives you a technical foundation in ballet, modern, jazz, and hip-hop dance techniques. You’ll also gain exposure and fundamental training in theater dance forms. The program’s dedicated faculty members facilitate performance and choreographic opportunities and encourage you to understand dance from historical and world perspectives.

After completing the program, you’ll be equipped to perform in one or more areas of dance, develop and critically evaluate dance performances in different styles, and generally contribute to the world of dance.

The ability to identify and work conceptually with elements of dance.
An acquaintance with a significant selection of dance repertory, genres and cultural sources.
An understanding of procedures for realizing a variety of dance styles
An understanding of choreographic processes, aesthetic properties of style, and the ways they shape and are shaped by artistic and cultural ideas and contexts.
The ability to perform in one or more areas of dance at a basic level.
The ability to develop and defend critical evaluations.

Completion Requirements

Complete 19 credits from six courses, including three core courses, two courses from a paired dance sequence, and one dance elective.
