Update on the UMass Boston East Residence Hall Situation
The East Residence Hall was closed on February 9, 2026 after a burst pipe on the 10th floor caused flooding.
Following an initial safety evaluation by Capstone On-Campus Management, the Boston Fire Department, and the State Building Inspector, the East Residence Hall will remain closed for the next several days. This closure allows remediation teams to repair damage, restore fire safety systems, remove excess water, and complete a full safety assessment before anyone returns.
As of February 11, the Dining Commons Food Service is now open for normal meal service, and students are permitted to briefly return to their rooms to retrieve essential personal belongings (see FAQs below). This coordinated and supervised re-entry process is being managed by Student Affairs and Facilities, with student safety as our highest priority.
East residents will be permitted to retrieve belongings from their rooms and retrieve mail on Thursday, February 12, during the following time blocks:
- 12:00 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.
- 3:30 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
We know this disruption is stressful for students and families. Our immediate priority is supporting affected students with temporary housing, meal access, essential items, and necessary accommodations to help maintain as much normalcy as possible.
We will continue to assess the building and share updates. Please continue to monitor your UMass Boston email closely for additional updates and instructions as they become available.
